Healthy life with workouts

HLWW

Background

This project was done during the course Graphical Interfaces at Chalmers.

The task was to create a desktop application that accommodates users’ fitness, nutrition needs, well-being, and encourages a healthy lifestyle. It was demanded to tailor each individual’s unique health, body condition and goals. The application needed to include nutrition plans, online workout sessions as well as allowing users to import data from external sources.

Process

Benchmarking

The project began with an exploration of platforms offering tools for fitness and health, as well as websites providing recipes. Inspiration was also drawn from unrelated sources to discover a style that would suit the project in terms of form, color, and typography.

Connections

Given the many elements involved in the project, a map was created to outline all necessary connections and to establish a logical structure for the pages. Ensuring simple navigation for users was a key priority.

Ideation

Once the necessary information for each page was identified, various methods of presenting it were tested. It was decided to enclose the information in separate boxes or blocks to improve clarity. A playful design approach was taken, and a color palette was developed early in the process.

Wireframing

All components and pages were done in a simple black and white wireframe design to try out different designs. The wireframes made it easier to then add colors and other elements for the final design.

Recipe pages

Final design

The final design was the desktop app HLWW – Healthy life with workouts. The application offers easy navigation between the pages Home,Training, and Nutrition as well as the profile page. The pages are divided into different boxes showing various data. The application allows the user to set up their own goals on the profile page and then both a nutrition and workout plan will be offered to the user. It is still possible for the user to manually modify the plan, for example the user can browse for different recipes to change the meal plan. The desktop app has in built workout sessions that is possible to perform at home. Overall the application contain all the required functionality that was given in the task, and is presented clear with easy navigation.

Learnings

This project was my first individual in the field of UX/UI-design as well as my first time creating a desktop application. Therefore I found this as a valuable experience where I learned a lot about how to design for a bigger screen. It was fun and educative to do a design by myself and to explore my own style. I was able to stand behind everything on the design and argue about my design choices which I found educative and exciting. This was a project were I felt that I evolved as a designer.
